Carpet Offcuts: Your Questions Answered

An end-of-roll piece can cover a smaller room or become a finished rug, provided its dimensions suit the job. The carpet is the same material as the full roll, simply a shorter remaining length; this guide explains checking sizes, choosing a piece and arranging fitting or binding.

What's involved

Remnants are pieces left after carpet has been cut from a roll. Instead of ordering a fresh length to suit your room, you choose from the individual pieces available. Their sizes and colours change as rooms are cut, so the first question is whether a particular piece fits the space you have in mind.

Smaller bedrooms, box rooms, landings, hallways, caravans, offices and stairs can all be suitable uses, depending on the dimensions of the piece. A remnant is not a different grade of carpet: it is the same carpet in a shorter length. Being an end of roll is why it usually works out cheaper than ordering new, rather than a promise of a fixed saving.

A piece does not have to become fitted room carpet. It may make a rug, runner or doormat if its edges are bound or whipped. Our carpet offcuts page explains the showroom stock and the options for taking a piece away, having it fitted or turning it into a finished rug.

How Cefn Carpets does it

Begin with the room measurements. Jot down the longest and widest points, including doorway recesses, and bring those figures when you visit. Remnants are fixed sizes, so these details help us check suitability instead of guessing from the apparent size of a piece.

Call the shop or visit Park Road in Rhosymedre to ask what is on the shelf. Stock changes as carpet is cut, and a size or colour seen previously may no longer be available. Tell us the room and the dimensions you need; we will say whether a remnant will cover it properly or whether a new cut would be a better choice.

If the piece works, you can take it away for your own fitting or have our own team fit it with grippers, underlay and door bars as needed. For a rug or runner, we can cut the piece to size and bind or whip the edge in our workshop. That finishes the raw edge so it will not fray.

What affects the cost

The price of a remnant depends on the particular piece. We do not publish a fixed figure because the stock consists of different carpets and dimensions. Ask for the price when you find something suitable, and check that its measurements work before deciding solely on how affordable it looks.

Fitting is a separate part of the job to discuss. Ask what underlay, grippers and door bars are needed, and whether any existing flooring must be lifted. If you want supply only, make that clear; if you want the complete fitting service, request a free measure and itemised quote so you can see the agreed work.

Binding a piece into a rug is priced on the job. The total edge length, edging type, carpet thickness and whether the material is yours or supplied by us affect the price. Agree the finished size and edging before going ahead. Bringing a piece in also lets us check its backing and condition rather than assuming every leftover will bind equally well.

What to check before you book

Measure the longest and widest points rather than only an open central area. Include doorways and recesses that the carpet must reach. Carpet comes in set roll widths, so a room's floor area alone does not tell you which piece will cover it or where a join may be needed.

Tell us how the room will be used. A piece for a quiet spare room may not be the same choice as one for heavily used stairs. Size determines whether a piece covers the room, but the carpet's suitability still matters. Our team will advise if a new cut makes more sense than trying to use a remnant that is too small.

Decide whether you want a fitted floor or a movable rug. If a piece is yours already, bring it to the showroom for a condition and backing check before agreeing binding. Discuss matching or contrasting tape and a whipped edge, and confirm the finished size rather than leaving the choice until after cutting.

Check current availability before making a special trip. If fitting is planned, agree preparation beforehand: clear small items and breakables, explain any heavy or fragile furniture and mention old flooring removal at the measure. Our fitters move normal household furniture, with wardrobes and drawers emptied first where relevant.
