How carpet binding turns an offcut or remnant into a rug, the edging options, and what decides the price.
Carpet binding is the process of finishing the raw, cut edge of a piece of carpet with a tape or whipped yarn so it will not fray. Once bound, a piece of carpet becomes a hard-wearing rug or mat that can be moved, cleaned and used anywhere.
It is the simplest way to get a rug that matches your room exactly. Leftover carpet from a fitting, a remnant from our stock, or a new piece cut to size can all be bound into a rug, doormat, stair mat or runner.
The most common finish is a tape binding, where a matching or contrasting fabric tape is stitched along the edge. It is neat, durable and suits most carpets. Some customers prefer a whipped edge, where yarn is wrapped over the edge for a softer, more hand-finished look.
Any shape and size can be done within reason — rectangles and squares are most common, and long runners for hallways and landings are popular too.
What affects the cost of carpet binding?
Binding is priced on the job rather than a fixed rate. The main things that affect it are the total length of edge to be bound, the type of edging you choose, the thickness of the carpet, and whether you are bringing your own carpet or choosing one from us.
